You will understand how to model in NoSQL and SQL databases.
  • You will understand the strengths and weaknesses of relational, dimensional, document, key-value, and triple models.
  • You will be able to choose the best model to meet your specific needs.
  • You will be able to choose the best NoSQL database to fit your model and other concerns, such as write performance, read performance, data integration, etc.
  • You will be able to choose when to use ACID or BASE consistency models.
  • You will understand the strengths and weaknesses of three different query languages: SQL, XQuery, and MongoDB.


Michael Bowers is principal enterprise data architect at the LDS Church. He has spent over 20 years as an enterprise architect, software developer, and database architect.

In 2008 Michael brought the MarkLogic NoSQL database to LDS. Today it delivers 1.8 TB of data to 95 million annual visitors with billions of page hits across 182 websites, transactional applications, and web services.
